DFG expands engagement in sub-Saharan Africa

At a meeting lasting several days in Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, DFG President Professor Dr. Katja Becker concluded an agreement on the expansion of cooperation with the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa. The DFG and the NRF are looking to further intensify their partnership with a total of 17 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

12 New Research Training Groups Established

Approximately €82 million for the first funding period

Addressing issues ranging from proton therapy to mobility rights, the new groups will receive funding for five years from October 2025 onwards. In addition, the Grants Committee agreed to extend funding for another five RTGs for an additional funding period.

Every year, seven German research vessels take hundreds of researchers out to sea. Together with other partners, the DFG and the BMBF have now developed a sustainable concept for financing the operating and expedition costs of the vessels. It is scheduled to come into effect in mid-2026.
